DSE Burn off in Taradale

The DSE are planning to burn the Taradale Conservation Reserve this spring.

The reason for the burn off has been stated as ecological. This makes no sense in an

area set aside for conservation. You only have to the end of the month to state your objection.

Arboretum Planting Day and Grand Opening

On Sunday 2nd September we will be planting and tidying at the Aboretum.

Meet there at 10:30am to get everything done then we can all relax and enjoy

ELMA held its AGM on Thursday 17th May 2012 at the Elphinstone Hall. The office bearers voted in are as follows:

President: Robyn Fearey
Secretary: Jill Smith (replaces Christa Kuhne)
Treasurer: Bill O’Reilly

Guest speaker was Ern Perkins from the Castlemaine Field Naturalists Club who gave a presentation on grass identification. Free copies of the CD rom are available down at the shop.

Council bulldoze Old Calder Highway

ELMA President, Robyn Fearey, found the Mount Alexander Shire Council contractors out on the Old Calder Highway with their bulldozers on the morning of Tuesday 13th March. They were pushing fallen trees away from the roadside. They have pushed the trees onto our plantings, as well as scalping the roadside area. The scalped area will now be infested by weeds. We are hoping to have this issue resolved and until that happens, works have been halted.

The Old Calder Highway has had considerable money spent on it to restore and maintain remnant vegetation. Hundreds of hours of volunteer labour has been spent on weed control, planting, and nest box monitoring. Although there are a number of trees down, they don’t pose any more of a fire threat than acres of weeds on private land, or the nearby State Forest.

Information will be available about Landcare, as well as a range of publications to take home. ELMA membership is half price on the night – only $10. Gold coin donation gets you in to the gig and in the raffle.

A koala wandered into Elphinstone…

Local resident, Lisa Komninos was out walking with her young daughter Jasmine, who looked up from her pram and spotted a koala in a tree. They live in Cemetery Road so it has obviously come out of the State forest. This isn’t a great photo as Lisa has sent it to me from her phone and it was backlit, but it is a definite record. So we’ll keep our eyes open for more in order to get a better idea of the mammals around here. Thanks Lisa.
